The cheese making building

The cheese making building

We had a super Canadian team here building this spring, 5 people from Steinbach Manitoba and 5 guys from Salmon Arm BC. They built the new building from making cheese (it also has a separate room with its own entrance for processing honey) which we hope to start using soon to make cheese. Why cheese? Two reasons, we will be able to teach a new skill, keep more students with useful jobs, and turn milk that we have to sell for less in the spring and summer months into a higher value product to sell. Remember, while improvement projects like houses and other facilities are built with the help of Canadian donors we try to operate the day to day expenses of our program from...

This year we have guys

While last year our first year students were almost all girls, this year we have had a group of guys and one or two girls (like other years some (two)students came and left after a few weeks or months because they did not feel that it was the program for them) Here’s a photo from the fall when the guys got Winnipeg Jets hats that were donated last year. The girls came to us later in the year, and Masha is still with us. The guys house is full with Andrey from last year and seven new...

Evelyn comes to visit

We were delighted to have Ev Wiens come to see us and see what’s happening in the village at the school at the end of March, while she was in Ukraine. She was able to visit all the group homes and go to the Saturday evening student church. She even baked some cinnamon buns for the building team arriving on Sunday to build our little cheese plant! We were delighted to be able to present her with one of our new Hope for Each t-shirts donated by Creative Print All in Steinbach Manitoba (all the students and staff have them now) as a memento of her visit of the project that has grown from John’s...

New students

This year we started class is September with eight new boys, however we hope to find a few girls to join them. As you can see we are using the new classroom created this year with the help of Canadian building teams. The second year class returned with six girls and Andrey, which means the boys house is maxed out at nine guys now. Most of the second year students and a couple of our grads are attending classes in Dnepro several afternoons a week to upgrade their diplomas so they can attend higher level trade school next year. These are all students who grew up in “handicapped orphanages” but most of them are of normal intelligence. .

New reno

This spring we had 3 teams come help with expanding the facilities. A two room addition was put on the front of the original girls house, and an old building we purchased was turned into a classroom, office storage room and three small apartments. There was a lot of work done, as you can see. Altogether they were here for all of March and April and were from Steinbach, MB Salmon Arm BC and Exeter, Ontario. We are already using the the big classroom/meeting room for ‘student church’ and soon some of our graduated students who are working on the farm will be moving into the unsupervised apartments. We will be able to house 6 students at the original girls...

Farm Show in Kiev

Farm Show in Kiev

Every February the students visit the farm show in Kiev, with an action packed time riding the overnight train this year Wednesday evening Feb 12th and returning to Dnepropetroesk on the train the next night after a busy day. I am told some people didn’t sleep that much, even after getting on board around 11 pm.     Highlights including walking around downtown Kiev and visiting the Water Museum this year along with the Agriculture Show.   They did not enjoy the rain that turned into several inches of day during the day. They did enjoy a big snowball fight in the park, just not having cold wet...

The container is here!

After eight months in transit, and more than a year in planning, the container has arrived from BC! Everything in the container was donated or purchased to send to help with the set up of the new trade school barn by CRMF, packed and coordinated by Jack Stephanyk and his friends in BC, who have come with two work teams here in the last couple years. Special thanks to Norm Stork, who donated the bobcat and little tractor.   The container itself was donated by the Big Steel Box people. It has been waiting to clear customs in Kiev for months, after being stick in transit for a few weeks after arriving in Poland, where it was unloaded and inspected there, too. Some of...

The new students Fall 2015

Surprising everyone, this year’s new class is nearly all female, ranging in age from 18- 20, so our new house has six new girls living there. When we started remodeling the house this spring we had assumed it would be for guys, but now there are rooms painted blue, green and pink!       On  September 20th, we got a new male student! His name is Anton, he’s 18 and lived in a different orphanage in Dnepropetroesk region than the girls and Andrey. He has several siblings and a mother. He’s been here a week and is a very enthusiastic worker at the barn and an excellent student in class.          Andrey came from the same...

Meet our returning students- The 2014-15-2016 class

In June 2015 we had eight students who made it to the end of their first year at the trade school. The Sasha that I wrote a story about at the beginning of the school, left to work for the summer and decided to go to a tractor driving school this year.  Nastya, who wanted to live with her father,  left to do that at the end of classes, so we have six second year students.  Valera went to work in a greenhouse for the summer, but returned for the second year of the program. He doesn’t like working, but he works hard in class, and always wants top marks. His mother was murdered by his father, and he has 6 siblings, I believe. One of his brother’s came to...
