First day of trade school ceremony 2015-16 school year

Well, it was opening for the new school year, and we had a real Ukrainian first day ceremony this year. Garry spoke about how proud John Wiens would be today, the first year of having both new and returning students to study at our school. It all started with John’s dream of a place for aged out orphans to study and a farm to work on and support the school. Our guest speaker, the village school principal, even brought the bell they used for the new students to ring last week at school, she said it is 40 years old, and some of our students rang it. She also spoke about how she often thinks of John when she walks past the village kindergarten (it is like a...

A Thanksgiving Dinner at the boys’ house

Last Friday we had a Thanksgiving dinner with the students and almost all the students made a special dish to eat to go with the turkey and stuffing. Ira and Andrey, the boys’ group home parents, were there with their daughter, who is a student at the local school, Ira made a lovely salad and jello and Maria, Garry’s assistant made piroskies, buns with apple filling. The girls made traditional oliviah salad and a potato dish.   The boys made many wonderful and complicated dishes and we were all stuffed by the time we finished dessert.       It was held at the boys’ home, which has been getting some finishing touches- the new metal roof...

Excursion with the students

We plan to have monthly excursions with the students and this first trip to Zaporosia was one the boys really enjoyed, a climbing, zip line activity place. They did both the second and third levels while the rest of us watched (except Garry, who did level two) Next month a more girl friendly activity, we hope, since Nastya stayed on the ground (but enjoyed the candy and juice boxes.)

School starts

This is the first week of classes for the trade school. We  are planning to study in two week modules with classes in the mornings Monday through Thursdays, from 9 am to 12:30. On Fridays they will do work experience instead of classroom learning. The students are also scheduled individually for some work experience in the barn with the cows during the school week. They are paid for this work, more than the amount they need to provide to the group house parents for living expenses. We hope that this method teaches them about real life expenses, besides learning how to live in a family atmosphere. Students who would like to earn extra money have the opportunity to...

Classes start on Monday

Meet Sasha, one of the students for the trade school this year. We went across Ukraine to pick up Sasha, so I’ll tell you a little about him, He was born in Moldova and has a sister and brother who live in the same Christian foster home that is run by a Swedish lady. They have lived there for seven years, their mother passed away, and their father was deported to Moldova when he lost his Ukrainian documents. Sasha finished school this year, and sold his motorbike because he wanted to buy a cow to milk. No one knew what to do with this plan of his at the foster home, and then Maria phoned about our school, the lady running it thought it must be a joke at first,...

Trade school news- new students and wheat harvest

Saturday morning one of orphans applying to come to the trade school came to try working on the farm here to see if he would be able to do it. I got some photos of him with Max B, feeding the cows with the wheelbarrows. So far we have one girl and 5-7 guys who are planning to attend this year, and are looking for more orphan students. We have been in touch with many Christian organizations working with orphans in Ukraine and social services. He along with some of the guys who are at loose ends will come to the village to stay soon, do some work on the farm, get paid a salary and pay the group home parents for room and board (part of our new fiscally responsible program...
