The corn irrigation project

Let’s talk about the twenty acres of irrigated corn we grew this summer. In these photos you can see the difference between the corn that was watered and the corn that wasn’t at the end of August. The plants are taller and still green and growing, and the cobs are bigger in the irrigated part of the field. Early in August the rest of the non-irrigated corn was cut for corn silage to make feed for the cows for this year. The ten acres that look brown here will be combined for grain, and the irrigated corn was cut for silage around the beginning of September.   Money for purchasing the supplies and infrastructure (big valves, roll flat and the tiny plastic...

Reno completed!

Our third house (and the first under our new organization in Ukraine for the trade school, Hope for Each) is finished. We bought an old house, gutted it, re-roofed it, and built everything new inside in a North American style, with all new Ukrainian furniture, so it is like new! We had three teams come from Canada this spring and Garry, the students and group home parents put many hours into finishing the project before move in day last week. The Alberta team was featured earlier this year, a month later we had a team from our home church in Steinbach, Manitoba who built the inside walls. They also got to work with the students on the...

Did you donate to buy a cow for the school?

If you did, you will be excited to know that the first 15 cows have been found and brought to the barn! Here are some photos of the lucky girls at their old farm and getting off at the trade school barn. They joined the other heifers and dry cows in the corral, or barn yard there, as you can see in the bottom photo, both groups found the new heifers arrival exciting. They aren’t quite cows yet, but pregnant heifers that will calve (give birth) and become milking cows in about two months, in September, when we plan to start milking cows in the trade school...

Trade school news- new students and wheat harvest

Saturday morning one of orphans applying to come to the trade school came to try working on the farm here to see if he would be able to do it. I got some photos of him with Max B, feeding the cows with the wheelbarrows. So far we have one girl and 5-7 guys who are planning to attend this year, and are looking for more orphan students. We have been in touch with many Christian organizations working with orphans in Ukraine and social services. He along with some of the guys who are at loose ends will come to the village to stay soon, do some work on the farm, get paid a salary and pay the group home parents for room and board (part of our new fiscally responsible program...

Trade school 2.0 Dairy track for 2014- building

With John Wien’s passing this January, we did not want his dream of the trade school to fade away. We had been in the midst of a rebuilding year, with no new students enrolled, as we we trying to raise enough money to finish the renovation of the barn for the school. The first class of students all did their work experience in the little Verhoog demonstration barn, but of course the plan was that the large freestall barn would not just be for the students to work and learn to care for cows in, but that the farm would be able to provide for many of the ongoing expenses of running the school. John had been able to raise funds for this before his cancer was...

The Trade School and Group Homes are Now Open!

September 2012- After a year of work and planning, the Trade School in Nikolai Pole is now open, along with two group homes in the same village for students of both genders. Classes began in early September, and all the students moved from nearby apartments to the newly renovated homes the following two weeks. On September 5th, we held our official ribbon cutting ceremony, and had representatives from the town and regional governments, along with many volunteers and friends, who helped make that day possible.  Below is a video that was featured on national television the week following the Trade School’s...

Student Profile: watch for profiles of our new students in fall 2014 –

You can read about some of our first students here. They have all moved into other training schools or university this year, with the exception of the two Maksims, who are working on farms. November 2012-It has not even been a month since Maksim Korabel became a student at the New Hope Training and Production Center, and already a true miracle has happened in his life. Maksim is 21. Most of his life he has spent in the orphanage. After graduation from school he studied at a state trade school. He did not manage to find a job afterwards, and since no one needed him he was left without any means of support. Once as he was out on the street and  some “well-wishers”...

Project Update July 2012: Nikolai Pole Dairy Farm and Trade School

Project Update – July 2012 - On June 15, 2012 we received certification from government officials, which will allow for us to begin teaching the Dairy farm track at our Trade School beginning September 1, 2012. Practical training will begin on the 40-cow dairy farm of Garry Verhoog, which is already fully operating, until our dairy farm is fully operational.  Garry and his wife have been living in Nikolai Pole, helping local villagers learn how to be better dairy farmers.  Garry’s family operates one of Canada’s largest dairy farms in Manitoba.  He will direct the Dairy Farming track at our Trade School. The large barn which we’ve already...
